Heart to Heart

Kenneth W. HaginGifts, Gifts, and More Gifts!

Over the past few days and weeks, the stores have been crowded with shoppers and many gifts have been purchased that will be placed under the Christmas tree. As these gifts are opened, there will be lots of bows, wrapping paper, and boxes strewn around the tree—all because this is the season for the giving of gifts!

But God has already given us the Gift of gifts—His Son, Jesus Christ. And when we accept His gift, we receive what the Bible calls eternal life, or everlasting life—“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

At this time of year, we celebrate the gift of the Babe of Bethlehem. But we need to understand that the Babe of Bethlehem became Jesus of Nazareth, Who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38). Jesus of Nazareth became the Lamb of God, slain to take away our sin. The Lamb of God became the resurrected Christ, Who arose from the dead. And the resurrected Christ became the ascended Lord, Who sits at the Father’s right hand always interceding for us.

As I think about all the gifts that will be given and received during this festive holiday season, I am reminded of the gifts that Jesus Christ has made available for us as believers. They belong to us if we will only accept them—if we will open the packages.

I’m talking about the gift of the Holy Spirit, the gift of healing, the gift of abundant life, and the gift of peace, just to mention a few of those God has told us about in His Word.

When we come to the throne of God, we should be like little children at Christmastime. We should dive into our packages and find the gifts we need at that particular moment. Then we should tear off the wrapping paper and begin to enjoy the wonderful gifts our Heavenly Father has given to us, His children!
